When did you start developing acne? How did you feel about it?

I started to feel guilty because I couldn’t heal my acne.

After many treatments, I was disappointed and I really thought that was NO CURE for my acne.

My father insisted to go and see a doctor so I gave it a last chance. She recommended me Roaccutane (or Accutane) as the last solution for my acne.

The Roaccutane Treatment lasted almost a year and a half. I was under medical supervision, and periodically I was doing blood tests and controls.

I was lucky because I didn’t have any serious side effects: only dry skin (lips, hands, nose).

In July 2012 I took the last pill, and today, I’m ok.

How do you feel after getting rid of acne? How do people react on seeing you now?

When the acne began to fade, sometimes I didn’t recognize my face in the mirror… It was a true miracle!

I now feel amazing on the inside and outside. For example, I have changed my style (haircut and clothes), I put on make-up, I go to gym, etc.

On the inside, I feel strong, confident and happy. I love to smile and to go out, to meet new people. My old friends are amazed when they see me.

I love myself and I have such a better life.

I started getting acne when I was around 13/14, and I thought that it was just normal teenage acne, so I wasn’t too bothered about it.

However, I noticed that my friends weren’t really getting acne, so it did bother me. I was like, “Why mee!?” haha.

But I did notice that whenever I went somewhere without makeup on, shop workers would recommend something to get rid of my acne and it did bother me a little bit as I thought that was the only thing they noticed of me.

I went to the doctors before, and they gave me a medicine called Isotrexin – however that didn’t work as great as I thought it would do.

Then around August 2012, I started using PanOxyl 10% Aquagel – which my brother used when he was younger to get rid of acne.

And it has been the best thing I’ve ever used as my acne has gone – and I’m left with scarring but that is fading

When I first used PanOxyl, there were side effects that did affect me, like dry skin, redness and burning. But those are common side effects that your skin will gradually get used to.

I also use Murad’s skin care which has helped to calm redness and combat my oily skin.

How long did it take to get rid of acne?

Well, I have been using the PanOxyl Aquagel since august 2012, and the Murad skin care since December 2012, and my acne has reduced so much!

How do you feel after getting rid of acne? How do people react on seeing you now?

I feel so much better that my acne has gone, as I feel that I don’t need to wear as much makeup now (if any), and I feel more confident.

I don’t need to pile on extra concealer and I have no large bumps on my face.

A lot of my family and friends have noticed that my skin has improved.

They’ve been saying, “Ohh your skin is a lot better!” which is a really uplifting feeling

What should others do to avoid acne?

I think to avoid acne, you should avoid using harsh products on the face, like too much microdermabrasion or exfoliating. This can aggravate your skin, and produce more acne.

Drink lots of water!

Make sure you wash your face with a mild cleanser , just something that won’t be too harsh or drying to the skin.

Oh, and also use a moisturizer regardless if your skin is oily. You need that moisture!

And don’t pick at acne, as this will cause it to spread all over the area.

I am Rachel, 29 and I currently work for Social Work Services as a Family Support Worker.

I earned my Degree in Childhood Studies in 2007. I am a single parent. I also run my own business doing Face Painting and Glitter Tattoos.

Developing Acne: When did you start developing acne? How did you feel about it?

I developed acne as a Teenager when I was about 15 / 16. My mum took me to the doctor who put me on the pill which helped my acne for years, yes I got the odd breakout but nothing too serious.

I went off the pill when I was 22, and my acne just appeared within a month. This was serious acne which devastated me.

I became more isolated and stopped going out. I was put on Roaccutane for a few months and went back on my pill and this helped.

I then stopped the pill when I fell pregnant and had great skin throughout my pregnancy and while breastfeeding for 18 months.

Then it all came back as severe cystic acne, very painful. The pill did not help, therefore I am now back on Roaccutane. I am on my 3rd month, and my skin is still breaking out so far, but hoping it will clear up soon.

My friends and family have been supportive throughout.

Did you follow a particular treatment to get rid of acne?

Currently taking 20mg daily of Roaccutane (called Accutane in the USA).

Have you experienced any side effects of Accutane?

The side effects of Roaccutane are quite severe, and a lot of consideration needs to be taken before going onto this medication.

I currently have very dry skin, hair and especially lips. I am suffering from headaches at the moment and still have acne.

Advice for others: What should others do to prevent acne?

I think teenage acne can be helped with a good diet and using external methods like Neutrogena and Clearasil , maybe even the pill.

Severe cystic acne in my late 20′s is very different, and I have tried the pill for many years, every possible external product I can find. I even try to find very natural beauty products to help and continue to try and have make up free days.

I invested in a Clarisonic Mia and I have found this beneficial. I had Glycolic skin peels every month for 6 months, I think this is something to consider for mild acne.

Everyone’s skin is different and it is about learning about your own skin and what suits it. Remember, skin changes all the time, so recognize when to try new things.

I am not the type of person with perfect skin. I started noticing some zits on my face when I entered college about 10 years ago.

But it was nothing serious. I would get some spots on my face and then after a couple of days, the zits would dry up and disappear.

Not until February of 2012. I started noticing some cystic acne growing on my temples and jaw area.

I was not alarmed at first, because I thought it was the usual pimples I get from time to time. Until it got so worse day by day.

Each day, some 5 or more cystic acne would grow on my face… Until my face was covered entirely with acne with puss in no less that 2 months.

At the peak of the breakout was my 26th birthday. I felt so ugly and horrible. I felt so helpless and didn’t want to look at myself in the mirror, I didn’t want to wash my face because it was too painful to bear.

I lost confidence and didn’t want to mingle, go out and even fix myself.

I got different reactions from people. But that’s also when I learned so many lessons. I found out who my real friends are, those who were still willing to look at me, talk to me and those who cheered me up and told me they see right through my face.

They told me they see what’s inside me and not what’s on the outer layer. My family was so concerned and tried to help me in so many ways. My mom was the most concerned out of all the people.

However, there were those people who ridiculed me and looked at me like I had some disease. I clearly remember one person told me she didn’t want to get close to me because she might also get my acne!

Because the acne got so worse, I had to go out of the house wearing face mask. People who don’t know me would stare at me on the street or on the train.

I felt so bad and felt like giving up. I cried myself to sleep each night.

I did so many things to get rid of my acne.

I went to a facial center here in the Philippines and they helped me clear my skin.

I found a good doctor from that clinic and she was the doctor that helped me from day 1 until the day my skin finally got better.

I really advise getting a doctor you trust and someone you are comfortable with. Someone you think can take care of your skin and help you get it better.

I took 15 300mg capsules of Tetralysal antibiotic for 15 days consecutive, and another 15 capsules for 1 month, which I took every other day.

When I was over the antibiotic, I took Diane 35, which is a hormonal pill. It is similar to Jasmine pill in the US.

It also helped that I went to the facial clinic once every two weeks for about 6 months to extract the puss and acne. It was painful, but I also had pimple injection. They use Kanolone, which is an anti-inflamatory fluid that kills viruses and bacteria causing acne.

It is very important to use a mild facial cleanser – I used Cetaphil and am still using it until now. I don’t advise using “anti acne” cleansers because they could sometimes lead to more breakout.

Water therapy is very important. I took 8 glasses of water using a really tall glass.

It is very important to be patient and let your skin breath when you have acne breakout. Trying to cover the acne will only make things worse. I did not wear make-up during those months, particularly foundation and powder. The only thing I applied on my face were eyeliner and mascara.

Keep everything away from your face. Hair, pillow, nails, cellular phone, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste. Those are some of the possible factors causing your acne to breakout even more.

The results: How long did it take to get rid of acne? Did you have any side effects?

After strictly following the routine for 6 months, I noticed that my skin started clearing up in August-September of 2012.

Acne Extraction and Pimple Injection – Fighting Hard to Get Rid of Acne

The only side effects to the acne extraction and pimple injection were the scars it left on my skin. It left really dark and deep scars. As for the pills, I only took them for 2 months, and noticed that I ate more and was a bit moody during those months.

As for emotional side effects, I learned to be humble and how to appreciate people from the inside and not from the outside. It may sound cliche to most readers, but it really is true. When all we see is beauty, we sometimes tend to get shallow.

Before the acne breakout, I was too materialistic, I laughed at people sometimes and noticed what was wrong in them. After the breakout, I learned how to be humble.

I learned that clothes, shoes and accessories don’t make a woman. People will not sincerely like you for what you look outside, but those who truly value and appreciate you will always, always look at you in the inside.

How do you feel after successfully fighting acne? How do people react when they see you now?

Everyone compliments me when they see me. They noticed the change in my skin, and how I look so much fresher, and how my aura has become so positive!

I smile often now and have regained my confidence. I started fixing myself again. Looking at myself in the mirror is now a joy, since I see my smile and not the acne.

I feel that it was a lesson learned. I learned that I was strong for being able to go out of the house, continue with my life and face the world while looking like that.

I also felt the need to share my experience with people. I posted this on my blog and on my Youtube channel.

At first I was very very afraid because I didn’t know how people would react. Would they hate me? Would they tell me I looked horrible?

But no, I got overwhelming support. And what’s even better is that I get messages from people around the world saying how my video / blog has helped them!

Your advice to others: What should people do to prevent acne? How should acne be treated?

Anything too much is bad. I wore make up a lot, and I stayed up late a lot.

Learning “How to Get Rid of Acne and Stay Happy” from Kristine’s Story

If its not necessary, let your skin breath once in a while. Go for a light make up or better yet, no make up sometimes. It lets your skin breath and regenerate.

Staying up until 3am was one of the big factors that caused my acne. I blog, so the only time I get to do it is when I get home from the office. Try to avoid staying up late.

It also really helps to eat right and eat healthy. I ate a lot of fruits during the acne breakout. I ate a lot of fruits rich in Vitamin C and anti oxidants like orange, watermelon and pineapple.

Anything else you would like to share with the readers?

I just want to say that no matter how hopeless you think your situation is right now, always think that there is still a solution.

I kept one quote in my mind and I am sharing it with you now:

“Everything will be alright in the end. If it is not yet alright, then it is not yet the end.”

At around the age of 9 years, I got my first small pimple but the colony of pimples started to manipulate my life at the age of 13 years old.

At first I wasn’t bothered at all until people around me – even the new people I meet – talked to me about my acne, how to get rid of it, the do’s and don’ts… It was like acne became a superstar of my life, it’s such an attention seeker!

My family thought it would only stay for a few months (but my battle ended years after). My family and friends were supportive but sometimes would pick on me…

I didn’t take the jokes personally – not until everyone else around me really focused on my acne. It’s like they could only see my acne and not me.

What have you done to get rid of acne? Did you follow a particular treatment?

I’ve done almost every kind of regimen / treatment just to get rid of my acne, but after a month or two, my face would get used to the regimen / treatment and then my acne would come back – ready for war, leaving craters on my skin.

Thankfully, the latest treatment I’m doing now is working for me for already a long time, and my face is already clear of acne!

I started developing acne at the age of 13 when hormones were changing, and my skin started to react. Most of my acnes were formed in my forehead as I have extremely oily T-zone, and at that time I had bangs that lead to more bacteria in the area.

At first, acne would come and go, so I never really cared much about it thinking it would heal by itself.

But things didn’t happen as I expected because at the age of 15, I experienced my first ever breakout. I had acne not only on my forehead but also on my cheeks, chin and nose part.

I was really insecure at that time and I would cover most of my face with hair just so people would not be able to see those huge cystic acne on my face.

Overcoming acne: What have you done to get rid of acne? Did you follow a particular treatment?

I didn’t have any knowledge at that time, so I just purchased a drugstore Benzoyl Peroxide ointment which I have seen on a TV commercial. I still remember how I felt upon using my first ever Benzoyl Peroxide because it sting the hell out of me.

It made my skin super red, dried out my skin and I also experienced peeling and flakiness of skin. Despite the consequences, I continued using it because the TV commercial says to continue using it for 1-2 months to see results / improvement.

After finishing the product, it did heal the breakout and the acne. However my normal skin had become sensitive. I don’t usually have any problems with sensitivity, but after using Benzoyl Peroxide, my skin was kind of messed up. It tends to react to products very easily, and I also developed Eczema after that.

What products did you use or methods you followed to finally make your skin acne free and minimize the break outs?

I went through a lot of products to combat my sensitive acne-prone skin, like:

• Salicylic Acid
• Hydroquinone
• Tea Tree Oil
• Propolis
• Sulfur
• Tretinion

I even went to the extent of having heat treatment, but none really worked PERMANENTLY. They did work on my first breakout, but the next time I used it, the efficacy was nowhere to be seen. You can check my blog as I have clearly noted down my experiences while using these types of products.

Lucky enough, I managed to run through some very helpful forums such as acne org where people all over the world discuss and share inputs on acne.

I was introduces to an ingredients called AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) which claims that it can help combat acne and also reduce wrinkles and fight aging of skin.

There are a lot of AHA products in the market, so I simply grabbed a tube of a cleanser that contained AHA. It definitely helped maintain my skin to not breakout that often.

I have been using AHA related products for more than 3 years now, and although sometimes my skin still develops a few acnes, they now normally go away after 4-5 days.

Advice for others: What should be done to avoid acne? How should acne be treated if someone gets it?

I would just like to make a shout out to people that it is best to seek a professional for any skin related issue because you might probably end up abusing and damaging your skin without you knowing it at all.

If you guys think that seeking a professional is beyond your budget, then you could do some research on your own such as determining first what is your skin type and later trying to search for products that are suitable for your skin condition.

Lastly, of course as we all know, drinking plenty of water, healthy diet and exercise will definitely lead to a clear and flawless skin complexion.

Anything else you would like to share with the readers? Any “eureka” product that you discovered that could help minimize acne scars?

I don’t develop acne that often. But there are still acne scars and marks left on my skin.

So I was introduced to a product called Morocco Argan Oil . It definitely helps minimize the acne scars and even out the skin tone well enough.

I have already used up 4 bottles, and am still continuing to use it as it really helps my skin stay more healthy and radiant.

I got cystic acne as soon as I quit ballet in my early twenties.

It was no coincidence that I also started eating dairy (cheese, ice cream) again at this time.

I felt disfigured. I spent so much money on trying to fix my face, trying everything in the drug store and on TV.

Nothing worked.

About 5 year ago, I happened to read a book by Dr. Perricone about getting clear skin from the inside out. I learned that dairy (the most congesting food) and processed soy (a close second) is a major cause of acne.

I cut dairy, soy, and foods containing high-fructose corn syrup out of my diet. Basically most packaged, processed foods contain soy.

And within a few weeks, my skin was beautiful.

It’s true that you are what you eat. Your skin is an organ of elimination… If you eat toxins, it will show.

I started developing acne in Grade 7, just mild, average teenage acne.

I struggled with mild acne on and off through my teenage years and into my 20s. Sometimes it would get worse and get more moderate.

I always hated it and was really ashamed about having acne. I’m a perfectionist so it was hard to admit to myself or anyone else that I wasn’t perfect and that I had this problem.

It did bother me a lot, but with a little makeup, most of the time it wasn’t such a big deal.

But then when I was almost 23, I suddenly came down with severe acne all over my face. This was by far the worst time of my entire life.

I was so devastated. I felt really desperate, anxious, and scared all the time.

I packed on makeup to try and hide it, but I know that never really hides a severe acne problem.

No one ever said anything about it directly to me, and it was hard talking to anyone about it, so I mostly suffered in silence. It’s really difficult to bottle up all those emotions.

My advice for others is just to let them know that they can cure their acne!

I know that many people are in a desperate situation where they’ve tried everything at the drug store and everything from the doctor and everything from the dermatologist, and NOTHING works (plus a lot of that stuff has terrible side effects anyway)… They feel like they are at their wits end.

However, most people don’t realize how much unhealthy habits can contribute to acne. Acne isn’t just something that happens out of the blue, it’s because of internal imbalances that CAN be fixed by you with a few simple lifestyle changes.

You can be in control of this situation, instead of waiting for the next cream or doctor to turn your situation around.

That’s a really sucky and helpless place to be in, but you don’t have to be there anymore.
